Central Michigan University's chapter of the National Broadcasting Society was honored several times over during the organization's annual convention.

The awards accepted by the chapter during the late-March conference in Chicago were:
  • CMU's NBS chapter was named the nation's Most Improved Chapter of the Year and achieved Model Chapter Status.
  • CMU NBS Adviser Jerry Henderson, associate professor in the School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, was named National Adviser of the Year.
  • Oakley junior Ashleigh Klipper was named National Communication Coordinator of the Year.
  • Novi sophomore Dan Church was named National Rookie Member of the Year.

There are 80 NBS chapters nationwide, and CMU's chapter won more of the personal recognition awards than any other at the convention, Henderson said.

Additionally, five CMU student projects were finalists in NBS's 2006-07 National Student Electronic Media Competition, with each receiving Honorable Mention awards. These included:
  • Grosse Pointe Woods senior Michael Greiner and Boyne City senior Sheryl Sturza for "Chippewa River Rafting" in the Video Feature Segment category;
  • Tianjin, China, graduate student Bowen Dou and Novi junior Caleb Newman for CMU's NBS Web site (http://www.bca.cmich.edu/NBS) in the Web Design/NBS Site category;
  • Greiner for the A-OK Films Web site (http://www.a-okfilms.com) in the Web Design/Overall Site category;
  • Greiner and May 2006 graduate David Seger for "The Imperial" in the Video Comedy Segment category; and
  • Greiner and Muskegon graduate student Tom Kauffman for "Jam Session: Bad Emo Band" in the Video Comedy Segment category.

NBS's mission is "to enhance the development of college and university students involved in broadcasting, cable, Internet communication, telecommunication and other electric media." Rochester, N.Y., graduate student Patrick Brown was president of CMU's NBS chapter in 2006-07; Church recently was elected to lead the group during the 2007-08 academic year.
